Chapter Twelve: Elmo’s World

Deklan’s phone began vibrating while he was in the meeting. He let it go to voicemail and ignored the texts. He needed to talk and he needed to listen. He had never agreed to a sponsor, but he spent some time talking to a gentleman who ran the group about that possibility. In the past, when he had the urge, he just threw himself into whatever task Mahone had sent him on. Now that this one straw was being yanked out of his grasping hand, he was thinking that the more standard approach might be in order. So, Deklan talked and listened and by the time it was over he was no longer shaking and no longer felt the immediate need for a drink.

The thirst, though, was always there. Always. There.

Deklan emerged into the sunlight and blinked at the brightness. Then he fished his phone out of his pocket and looked at the indicator telling him that he had voicemails and text messages. He went with the voicemails first.

“Falls, this is Ray Olderr,” said the first. “Call me. Dwight’s father is coming via a private plane this afternoon. I don’t think we’ll be able to release the body that soon, but it might be your best chance to talk to him. Call me back as soon as you can.”

Deklan made a note and then checked the texts.

HEY MAN, COME BY HERE ABOUT 7 OR SO. I FOUND OUT SOME VERY INTERESTING THINGS.

Elmo. OK, so he would need to head back downtown and then out to see Elmo. He could handle that. Things were progressing. Deklan felt more in control of himself and of things around him.

Mostly he was angry. Angry that he had been had once again. Provided, of course, that this was all true and Mahone was behind framing and murdering Dwight Neal, of course. He also needed to get hold of Gatesworth and talk to the man.

Good. Work. He needed to work. Work the case.

Deklan called Ray Olderr. “Hey, Ray. Sorry I missed your call. I was talking to the geologist that Dwight’s group was going to meet up with today.”

“Did he have anything interesting to say?”

“Yes, but it seems flimsy that he was the reason Dwight would be killed,” Deklan said. “Is Dwight’s father there, yet?”

“Not yet, but he will be in about an hour,” Olderr said. “Come on down and hang out around here. You’ll get the first crack at him after he identifies the body.”

“Right.”

Deklan hung up and then sent a text back to Elmo.

I’LL BE THERE.

Deklan got into his car and made sure that the Bluetooth was hooked up and then dialed Warren Gatesworth. It rang and rang. Just when Deklan was sure that he was going to voicemail, the old man’s voice came over his car speakers. It was a supremely creepy thing, too.

“Mr. Falls,” Gatesworth said.

“Hello, Mr. Gatesworth,” Deklan said, struggling to keep his voice calm. “How are you doing?”

“About as well as you can be given the circumstances,” Gatesworth replied.
